Wix’s latest redesign aims to simplify and optimize its online presence, and its designers have taken a number of cues from the likes of Google’s own website redesigns.
They’ve also taken a page from the style book of their competitor, Flipboard, which is a company that has designed some of the best looking and most accessible websites on the web.
But, for all its beauty, the redesign of Wix isn’t perfect, as it’s still a work in progress.
That’s partly due to the fact that the company has never been particularly good at designing websites.
“We were really early adopters of the web, and we’ve learned from it,” says Wix co-founder and CEO Alexey Chiklov.
“But we’re not a great designer, and I think that’s a big issue.
We don’t have a really good background in design.
So when we start with a new design, we tend to be very quick to jump in and change things, but we don’t really know what we’re doing.
So the redesigns are a bit of a learning experience for us.”
Chikov and his team decided to take a different approach to designing websites, by first creating a “webpack” that would run on top of a website’s server, and then building the entire website from scratch.
The result is a website that’s extremely flexible, yet still very much based on the Wix ethos of simplicity and flexibility.
While Wix is known for its simplicity and freedom of choice, its team has also come up with a number useful tools to help them create a website quickly and efficiently.
“When we created our website, we didn’t think that it was going to be an enormous project,” says Chikrov, “We thought that we were going to do it in a day.
But when we actually did it, we realised that it’s really quite time consuming, and a lot of it is just reading code, and that we didn´t have time to do that in the first place.”
One of the biggest challenges for Wix designers has been figuring out how to structure the website’s structure to make it easier for users to navigate, while also making it easy for users and designers to work together.
WIX is also constantly learning, but that’s not the only thing the company is working on.
“I think it’s just a natural thing that we’re working on,” says Bridgette Lichtman, Wix´s Director of Product Management.
“It’s the fact we have a lot more users, that is a big thing, because it’s easier for us to target and build a really robust product that people are going to want to use.”
While WIX has yet to release its full redesign, it’s been one of the most popular websites on its platform.
And, while the new website has received quite a few positive reviews, it still doesn’t have the most recent update available.
“There’s still no new version available, but the team has been hard at work building it,” Lichtmann says.
But we had a lot fewer users than we had hoped for, and with the new version that’s going to come out soon, we’ll be able to offer it to a much larger audience.
We’ll have a better idea of what the user base is, and hopefully we’ll also be able improve the UX.
But right now, the new redesign is pretty much just an evolution of the old version.”
To help users quickly navigate and navigate easily, WIX also made some significant changes to the site’s look.
It’s not uncommon for a company to change its look for a new release, but Wix didn’t do that.
“As you know, our primary focus was on building an attractive and intuitive website for users,” says Lichtmans.
“To do that, we wanted to keep things as simple as possible.
We also wanted to make sure that we still maintained a lot the same interface we used on the old website.
So we took a lot from the old site, and also some of our new design ideas from other designers, which we’re trying to share with you today.
And that’s how we came up with the updated look.”
